I am grade 12 student who has just recently graduated. You might call me accomplished, and in a way, I am, but not in the way you’d think. 12 years of pouring over text books and being lined up to be judged in front of my peers has not made me any more intelligent. I can tell you the first 45 digits of Pi and I can explain to you the difference between an acid and a base, I can recite the Pythagorean Theorem in my sleep, I will recite lines out of a textbook like they are a religion. But I cannot tell you the value of security, or of kindness. The distinct contrast between personal health and personal gain. I can tell you in grade 10 four of my classmates attempted to take their own lives before finals. I can tell you our counsellors office is always booked. I can tell you how when I didn’t understand something in AP Chemistry my teacher asked me to leave if I could not participate in his class. I merely asked him to explain a question. Instead of doing his job and teaching, he told me to leave. Told me I was not good enough to be there. Mistakes are viewed as failure in these hallways. A wrong answer is a sin you must atone to, not a human error, but a flaw so grand it defines your entire life course. There is no “average” here. We all must exceed expectations. Do your parents know that a grade that is considered average is a “C”? When I got a C in fourth grade my parents grounded me for a month. They said I was lazy and stupid and incompetent and that I’d better smarten up and stop fooling around. I never fooled around. I am driven by a deep need to impress others. I never fool around. I worked and worked and worked, with a deep hollow of anxiety in my chest. I have never been good at History, but I worked and worked and I attained at best a low B. It was not good enough. It is not said but we are expected to put our education before our personal health. It is not asked of us, but it is what we must do to achieve what we are asked to achieve. Our teachers will tell you, “Oh, I only give them one hour of homework each night.” Which is essentially true, each of my five teachers only gives me one to two hours of homework each night. Hmm, that adds up to 5-10 hours of homework, and overdue classwork, and projects. Say goodbye to sleep, say goodbye to feeling calm. I’ve developed a deep rooted anxiety disorder due to school and perfectionistic tendencies. Even when you get 100 percent on an assignment they still criticise you, it is never good enough. One slip, and you are in deep deep trouble. I can tell you that 90 percent of us try our hardest, and our teachers and parents stand in the sidelines, screaming, “You can do better than that!”

Repeated for emphasis: I can tell you that 90 percent of us try our hardest, and our teachers and parents stand in the sidelines, screaming, “You can do better than that!”

Jesus was a homeless Palestinian anarchist who held protests at oppressive churches, advocated for universal health care and redistribution of wealth, before being arrested for terrorism, tortured and executed for crimes against the state, now go ahead and explain to me why he’d vote conservative. I’ll wait.

PERSEPHONE
I don’t know about you, boys
But if you’re like me then hanging around
This old manhole is bringing you down
Six-feet-under getting under your skin
Cabin fever is a-setting in
You’re stir crazy! You’re stuck in a rut!
Or you could use a little pick-me-up
I can give you what it is you crave
A little something from the good old days
I got the wind right here in a jar
I got the rain on tap at the bar
I got the sunshine up on the shelf
Allow me to introduce myself
Brother, what’s my name?
My name is…

CROWD
Our Lady of the Underground!

PERSEPHONE
Brother, what’s my name?

CROWD
Our Lady of Ways!
Our Lady of Means!

PERSEPHONE
Brother, what’s my name?
My name is…

CROWD
Our Lady of the Upside Down

PERSEPHONE
Brother what’s my name?
I’ll tell you my name…
Persephone!

Some Notes on SnK Harnesses

dangerous-ladies:

A Shingeki no Kyojin 3DMG harness for a 5’7” individual takes approximately 13.5 metres (~15 yards) of strapping/belting, which works out to being roughly 1.3 metres of 45” fabric. We have, however, omitted the foot portion of the harness; not only is it never going to be seen under the boots, but it also makes no sense on a technical/practical level to wear.

As such, it is cost-prohibitive to buy pre-made belting by the yard; it is much more cost-effective to buy pleather and cut it into strips and topstitch the edges down. While it may take considerably more time and effort, textile materials for the straps will only be between $10-20 per harness, instead of upwards of $65 per harness. Making them ourselves is also convenient in that we don’t have to find matching beltings in different widths, as our harnesses are designed with both 1.25” and 2” wide segments.

We are making the “brackets” of our harnesses (thigh, hip, back, shoulders and underarm) as well as the underarm holsters out of vegetable-tanned leather (probably 6oz-8oz; the weight will make it durable and the edges can be easily sealed with good paint.) We guess that they will take roughly 12 square ft of leather for all four harnesses, which probably works out to being another $15 worth of materials per harness.

Additionally, the harnesses need hardware. For our harnesses, this means 7 one-pronged buckles (1.25”) and 1 two-pronged buckle (2”), as well as 22 sets of heavy-duty snaps. To avoid the “wait how do I get into this” problem we split the harness into three segments: shoulder harness, belt, and leg harnesses. It also has the added perk of making it easier to go to the bathroom; one will only need to undo the leg segments and the pants can be pulled down from there. Comfort trumps one’s ability to float through the air on a flying trapeze, and given that the 3DMG will likely not be done until next year, there was no sense in us trying to design the 3DMG to support the weight of gear when we a) don’t know how heavy they will be and b) don’t know how they will be attached. It is impossible to design it with the intention of adding such complicated (and cumbersome!) props without actually having at LEAST the plans for the 3DMG, and even then, it won’t necessarily work out. When the girls make the 3DMG, THEN I’ll worry about redesigning/tweaking their harnesses to support the gear.

Another reason we split the design into three pieces is to avoid the brown hip wrap dilemma; we noticed inconsistencies between different pieces of concept art that showed it would be impossible to wear the hip wrap while also maintaining the complete structure of the harness as-designed; elements like the hip bracket manage to pass OVER the wrap despite being attached to straps that go UNDER the wrap, and we were concerned by how many cosplayers’ white pants showed in gaps between the belts and wraps. Additionally, we will have to remove the belt loops from the pants and install new belt loops on the brown hip-wrap; the white belt loops are a distracting design element.

And those are my thoughts on my work from the past few days. 🙂
